Voices of Giving Honor Awards
The Annual Voices of Giving Honor Awards recognize and pay tribute to those in Summit, Portage and Medina Counties who—out of selflessness, generosity, and foresight—have chosen to leave a legacy (bequest or other planned gift) to their favorite charity. These individuals represent the true spirit of giving, essential for an enhanced quality of life in our communities now and in the future.
All are invited to join us Voices of Giving Honors Award Recognition Reception, which will be held on Thursday, September 19, 2019, at the Portage Country Club from 4:00 to 6:00 pm. Tickets are $25 each. Click here to purchase tickets.
Robert Fischer
Nominated by Tuesday Musical Association
Robert Fischer is a longtime member, subscriber, donor, and advocate of Tuesday Musical Association. Over the past decade, he has held multiple roles on Tuesday Musical’s Board of Directors, including past Board President and Governance Committee Chair. He has also served on multiple board committees, including the Development and Scholarship Committees.
Bob and his wife, Beverley, have contributed significant funding to Tuesday Musical’s annual fund over the past 10 years and are current members of the 1887 Legacy Society.
With his engaging personality, Bob frequently introduces new audience members to Tuesday Musical concerts, members programs, and other events. With his encouragement, many of these new audience members have become subscribers and loyal audience members. Plus, he has singlehandedly recruited several hardworking and generous board members, thus strengthening Tuesday Musical’s future as an anchor arts organization for Greater Akron.
In addition to being an inspirational ambassador and leader, Bob is also a humble friend to Tuesday Musical’s current patrons, regularly driving disabled or elderly Tuesday Musical patrons to events.
Bob and Beverley Fischer’s bequest will help Tuesday Musical continue to bring world-renowned classical musicians to Greater Akron and Northeast Ohio, and to share these stellar musicians’ talents and inspirations via community engagement and education programs.
Leading by example, Robert Fischer’s generosity has inspired several Tuesday Musical members and subscribers to join the 1887 Legacy Society. And, as a member of Tuesday Musical’s Development Committee, Bob has done everything from personally reaching out to prospective members of the 1887 Legacy Society to helping to plan 1887 Legacy Society programs. Robert Fischer’s foresight and generosity will help to engage and inspire future generations of music lovers.
J. Scott Rainey
Nominated by The Salvation Army, Summit County Area Services
J. Scott Rainey has a long and valuable volunteer tenure with the Salvation Army, serving on the Advisory Board since 2009, and serving on the Finance Committee, as chair of the Resource Development Committee 2010-2015 and as chair of the Nominating Committee, since 2016.
He has done an exemplary job of helping keep The Salvation Army front and center with employees and influentials at the Charles Schwab office in Richfield and their San Francisco based foundation. For ten years, Charles Schwab hosted a sold out Estate Planning and Charitable Giving Seminar for The Army and provided lunch. When Scott was Advisory Board Chair, he made a Chairman’s Challenge to Board members to include the Salvation Army in their estate plans. He personally included the Salvation Army in his estate plan in the form of a six figure bequest. Two other board members stepped up to his challenge and did the same in their estate plans. Through his example, the Salvation Army can see into the future of providing sustained support for their programs.
As a member of the Charles Schwab Community Ambassador Network, he is the Salvation Army’s internal advocate with the Charles Schwab Foundation and each year recommends/nominates the Salvation Army for multiple grants and volunteer matches, usually more than $10,000 annually.
In 2014, when he was Advisory Board Chair, he initiated a Division wide Leadership Summit of volunteer Board Chairs throughout northeast Ohio, which was so successful that it became an annual event.
Other activities include creating and placing bins throughout Schwab’s Richfield building to collect unused travel toiletries for the Shower program, donations of new iPads, and dozens of reconditioned laptops and desktops for the Salvation Army of Summit County.
In addition, he arranges for Schwab employees to ring kettles for an entire week during the holiday campaign, arranges for a Schwab online Red Kettle annually, places a mini-kettle in the Schwab cafeteria each Christmas, and arranges for Schwab volunteer day each year to clean up the Maple Street Campus, marshalling over 30 volunteers.
