2016 Voices of Giving Honor Awards

The Thirteenth Annual Voices of Giving Honor Awards was held on Thursday, June 16, 2016 at the Portage Country Club.

At the Awards Ceremony, Donald and Marcia Stone, nominated by Akron Children’s Hospital, received the Crown Jewel Award and received a lovely engraved clock. The Stones were honored because of their unfailing support of Akron Children’s Hospital since 1988 and their establishment of the Robert T. Stone, MD, Respiratory Center in honor of Donald’s brother, Dr. Robert Stone, who has been a physician at Akron Children’s Hospital since 1967. The Center has enabled the hospital to better treat children with Cystic Fibrosis. The Stone’s ongoing support continues to impact the care of Cystic Fibrosis patients through support for best practices. Akron Children’s Hospital received a $700 gift from the Lisle Buckingham Fund of the Akron Community Foundation for nominating the Crown Jewels.

Other awardees included Jack Marinelli, nominated by Holy Family Parish and School, Marilyn Buckey, nominated by Akron Community Foundation and Bill Wooldredge, nominated by the Salvation Army. Each of these awardees received a beautifully engraved crystal paperweight.

The Maynard Family Foundation provided a grant to provide gifts for the nominees.

Leave a Legacy - Summit, Portage and Medina and Leave a Legacy - Stark to Hold First Joint Meeting in August.

We are excited to announce Leave a Legacy – Summit, Portage and Medina will hold its first joint meeting with Leave a Legacy – Stark on Thursday, August 18 at 9 a.m. The meeting will focus on Charitable Gift Planning for Business Owners.

Marlene Dunford - 8/21/15

We are sad to report the passing of Leave a Legacy’s founder, Marlene Dunford. She passed away on Aug. 21 after a long battle with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Marlene built this program in Summit, Portage and Medina Counties in 2002 to encourage people to leave a gift in their estate to their favorite charity. She has helped many organizations and touched lives across our region with her kind demeanor and selfless attitude. We are eternally grateful for her dedication to and passion for the mission of Leave a Legacy. She will be greatly missed.

VOICES OF GIVING ANNUAL HONOR AWARDS- THE “JEWELS OF OUR COMMUNITIES”

The Voices of Giving Honor Awards began 2004 to recognize and pay tribute to those in Summit, Portage, and Medina Counties who, out of selflessness, generosity, and foresight, have chosen to leave a legacy (bequest or other planned gift) to their favorite charity. These individuals represent the true spirit of giving, essential for an enhanced quality of life in our communities now and in the future.

Awards, The "Jewels of Our Communities" that was held on Thursday, June 18th, 2015 at Portage Country Club:

The "Crown Jewel Award" was presented to The Richard and Joyce Fowler Family,

nominated by the Robinson Memorial Hospital Foundation and Barbara Ainsworth-Porter, nominated by Tuesday Musical Association.

A fun legacy fact about the evening – our pianist at the beginning of the reception, Austin Griffith, also happens to be the grandson of Phil Maynard of the Maynard family. The Maynard Family Foundation is our original 2004 awardee.

MARLENE DUNFORD RETIRES AS PROJECT MANAGER

Marlene Dunford, Founder and Project Manager of Leave a Legacy Summit, Portage, Medina was honored at a retirement breakfast on October 2nd, 2014 at Silver Lake Country Club for her many years of dedication to Leave a Legacy, founded in 2002. Prior to starting Leave a Legacy, Marlene spent over twenty years in non-profit fundraising, holding several positions at local non-profits, including Summa Health System and United Way of Summit County.

With many friends, family, and colleagues in attendance, Marlene was thanked and presented with a beautiful pewter plaque by Bonnie Wojno, Volunteer Chair. The plaque is inscribed with the words: “People who touch our lives, stay in our hearts forever”, a sentiment shared by all who had the opportunity to know and work with Marlene. Bonnie stated that we are eternally grateful for Marlene’s leadership, her passion, and commitment to Leave a Legacy, helping the organization grow through the years. During Marlene’s tenure, almost a thousand wills were written free of charge by attorneys who participated in “Write a Will Month”. Marlene also initiated Voices of Giving, a signature event, held every year at the Portage Country Club. Charities nominate donors who have made a planned gift to their organization and a “Crown Jewel” is selected for special recognition.

Patrick Weschler, of Buckingham Doolittle, announced that a scholarship fund, the Marlene Dunford Planned Giving Day Scholarship Fund, has been set up by Leave a Legacy in Marlene’s honor. Each year, a scholarship will be awarded to a Leave a Legacy partner , enabling them to attend the Northern Ohio Planned Giving Council’s Planned Giving Day, held every May in Cleveland.

Elizabeth Ganocy, replaces Marlene Dunford as the new Project Director of Leave a Legacy. Liz was the first Volunteer Chair of Leave a Legacy when it began 12 years ago and was a Cabinet member for many years. She most recently was Development Director for a local charity and is honored to follow in Marlene’s footsteps.
